Updates a plenty

The Editor has news!

First on the list, The Editor is going to Maine for the summer. Partaaaaaay! Yes, I got the gig. I will be in Maine. On the Coast. With no humidity. And sadly, no money. I think I made more at the bookstore than I will make there. Thank god for savings accounts. I'm sure it will be interesting at the very least. It will be great on my resume, and it will require me to be more social than I generally want to be. Ugh for that. Here's hoping I can buy a cheap mattress to that's bigger than a twin for the summer.

Second on the list, The Editor has handed in her "test" for the Potential New Employer. PNE asked me to do this test, for a corporate client in town. Of course interviews were done with no method to the madness, and I must cobble together a story. The story's been cobbled. I'm happy. There is one clip I hate, but I think the corporate monkeys will want it there. No graphics, no music, no b-roll, just interviews right now. So yes, I feel good.

Ok, wait, I just sent the link on to several people to get feedback. Second guessing is second nature a moi! Groan.

Maybe more news later. We shall see.

So sometimes the computer lab is fun

I work in a computer lab. Yeah, yeah, but it pays my tuition.

I genuinely like working in tech support, on a hands on basis. There's just something about solving problems quickly that I find appealing. I also like teaching people little tips and tricks with programs. And it's always fun when someone says "I want to do X, but there's no way to do it" and I laugh to myself and say "Oh yes there is, let me show you". Technology is cool. It will do great things for you. I like spreading the gospel of Adobe, Apple and Macromedia.

Today at the lab everyone was editing it seemed. Everyone had questions (and the utterly stupid mundane ones I let someone else handle, otherwise murder would have been committed). This was the first day in a long while that I was on my feet for most of the day. I love days like this and wish it would happen more often. Several people thanked me for my help, which was nice. Now if I can up the ante and attain the goal I did while working in my undergrad lab- being thanked in the credits for several student films one semester (I think I hit 8, while another person hit 5 or 6), then that would be great. Part of that is pure ego, but the other reason is that people realize what the lab assistants do for them, and that their projects are ultimately better for the support we provide. So credit thanks is always a nice pat on the back which we rarely get.

Yes, this is a rambling. It has nothing too really do with editing per se, but I felt inspired. Also, the lab is now quiet and I am bored :P

I hate After Effects

That is all.

And I hate Motion Graphics 2, the bane of a class I'm in for reasons I can't explain at this point in time.

AHHHHH. MOTHERLAND!

Ah, Right! MMP and Pissing Teachers Off!

How could I forget! Major Media Player! Drama! Oi!

So, more drama ensued with MMP. They yelled at me over e-mail. They got snooty with me. I politely told them they never told me about XYZ and dude, that's stupid. Then they said "oops". So then I delivered the trailer to them. End of story. I do not care anymore.

Onto professor I piss off on a daily basis. i'm still doing it. It's fun. I enjoy giving her shit that she must grin and bear. Or ignoring her when she instructs a class in the complete wrong way to do something. Ah, fun times, fun times.

Onto professor I pissed off once. She seemed to have been in a mood. Go figure.

Still don't know about Maine. Don't ask. MWROAR.

Crap, Someone Knows this Exists Now

So I must UPDATE it. How awful!

I can't even recall what I posted about last time, so here's a general update plus some editing tidbits.

1- I interviewed for that job in Maine. There will be little to do but work, drink, and hopefully read a whole helluva lot. I hope I get it. Things seem hopeful that I will since I knew the Post Manager from my old college. I should know in another week or so.

Yes, I'm climbing the walls to find out. Don't pester me about it.

2- The place where I'm currently working just lost their editor. I was asked to apply for it. If I got Maine AND this gig, they would hold the gig over the summer and I would go full time in the fall. Which means part time school. Which would make me insanely. happy.

So as you can see, many eggs in a basket which haven't hatched. On top of that all, I'm EPing a 48 Hour team in the festival for DC.

For those of us keeping track of my busy schedule, let's sum up what's due when.
May 4th- Final versions and website for Advanced Visual Media Portfolio.
May 7th- 48Hour Festival film is due at 7:30pm.
May 8th- Final cut of Video 2 program.
May 9th- Final version of Motion Graphics 2 project.

*DIE NICOLE DIE*

For real. I can't make this shit up, I assure you.

Anyway, editing rules to live by:
1- Never cut A roll- B roll. Always cut A-Roll to sequences of B-roll shots.
If A roll is not entertaining, don't cut back to it damnit. We know who's talking!
2- Montages are fun. Do them often.
3- Don't tell everyone what the point of your project is in the first minute. Especially if your footage allows it. Especially if your project is LONG. First 5 minutes? Sure. First 1? No way.

In other news, I might get to edit an actual piece of video that's 1) nothing to do with training, 2) has no script, and 3) i can be creative with. Don't pass out or anything. I know I almost did.

I will peruse previous postings to see if I need to comment on anything else.
